So, you want to start a blog? Starting a blog has honestly been the smartest thing that Tyler and I have ever done, (besides getting married and all).

Free Vs. Paid

There are plenty of blogging platforms out there. Many people often ask if they should go for a free platform or a paid platform.

Here is the simplest answer we recommend: Get a paid platform.

We will share with you why in just a moment, but getting a paid blog is better in the long run and will make you more money ultimately.

What is web hosting?

The easiest way to define what web hosting is, is this: Web hosting is where your blog will live, as the company provides the service of making your website appear online.

After that you might have to select a way to edit and customize your blog, but it’s all hosted by the web host itself.

If you’re ready to get started blogging, click here to get started with Bluehost. They are very affordable and are a great and trustworthy brand!

Why free platforms are a bad idea.

Reason #1

If you want to be successful blogging, you have to invest something into it. Having a small investment helps drive you to stick with it and makes it harder for you to give up when you don’t see money coming in right away.

Think about the best blogs out there you have ever seen. They didn’t start that exact blog without an investment. A small investment can go a long way.

Reason #2

The second reason you should invest money into your blog is because free platforms don’t give you as much control

Free platforms like Blogger.com or Medium, they don’t offer much control so you can do what you want. You can’t advertise on google, and you don’t really have a great theme to choose from.

You also can’t customize the blog to make it look the way you want it to.

Reason #3

Paying for your blog makes it more professional. For example, when using a free web host, you don’t have your own domain name. You have something weird that has “.blogger.com” and they don’t appeal to readers.

*These kind of blogs are not search engine friendly*

If your blog is not ranking on search engines, you severely limit your blogs potential.

79% of our traffic comes from search engines, while only 21% comes from other sources such as social media and advertising. As you can see, If you really want to make money blogging, you need a professional platform to get started.

So many people will look at blogs on google search results, and if it doesn’t look professional, or like you’re an expert, the odds of that person clicking on yours is low. To make money blogging, you need a lot of traffic and this will severely hurt your chances of making money.

Free platforms are great, as long as you don’t expect to make a lot of money. Save yourself the time and energy and pay for a great platform to get started.

What web host should I use?

There are a lot out there you can choose from, but we recommend using Bluehost.

Bluehost is one of the cheapest ways to start a blog in todays age. It’s very easy to get started, and if you sign up through our link you a discounted rate of $3.95 a month.

They offer great services to help your blog get set up, and they offer Wordpress as the main platform to edit and customize your blog. Sign up and also get a free domain name for up to 1 year. The deal doesn’t get any better than that!

This is, in our opinion, the cheapest way to start a blog. After you sign up with Bluehost, head over to this article we have written for you to make it easier with starting your blog and monetize it. Once you get your blog going, start collecting emails immediately.

When making money with a blog, email marketing is the best way to ultimately make sales and money. We suggest using Convertkit. They are affordable and very easy to use. You can definitely choose another platform to start collecting emails, but we love Convertkit because they have made it so easy for us to send emails and schedule automated emails to our readers.

Final Thoughts

Get started today! We do recommend you choose a paid platform to start, only because we want to see you succeed. But starting a blog is a whole lot cheaper than starting a business that costs thousands of dollars.

A blog is the cheapest way to make real money, and it really does work. You have to remember though, blogging takes time. Make it your goal to get to 100 blog posts within 1 year, and with the right monetization techniques and SEO strategies, you’ll be making your first thousand a month.

Be patient however, as blogs take a while to really start making money. Many bloggers out are making $10,000 or more a month! Some out there are making $100,000 a month! And it all started with a cheap investment.
