There are multiple avenues to make money off a blog. And that’s what we’ll discuss in this article. They are:
Selling Ad Space
How do you actually make money?
There are different ways to have fun making money with ads. If you’re just starting out, or your monthly traffic is below 100,000 monthly viewers, you probably won’t qualify for higher end ad agencies.
There are PPC or CPC (pay-per-click or cost-per-click) and then there’s CPM (cost-per-1000-impressions). The rates vary as to how much you actually make, but according to Wordstream, the average CPC is as follows.
The best way to start out is with Google Ads.
This is the easiest ad agency to qualify for when just starting out. Google ads is a CPC ad network that pays you for every click on an ad. If someone on your blog sees an interesting ad and clicks on it, you would likely get a compensation from Google.
You can sign up here, and it’s very easy to do so. Not everyone should apply, however. If you just started your blog, wait at-least 3 to 6 months to apply. This will give you greater approval odds and more time to build your brand.
Once you have around 100,000 or more monthly views, I suggest moving to a better ad network, simply because they will pay you more. Other options include:
That’s really about all the ad networks I would recommend. There are definitely more, but these are our recommendations for displaying ads on your blog.
This can be another money maker. Affiliate marketing can take time to learn and get used to doing. It is an art to be learned. However, once learned, you could be making most of your money with it.
Affiliate marketing is the act of referring a company’s product to your readers. Let me explain further.
When you sign up to be an affiliate, for example with Bluehost, if someone clicks on your link that you embedded into your text and then from there signs up with that company, you get a commission and they might get a discounted rate for being a referral.
If you’re a blogger, sign up with Bluehost and start your blog from there. Then move on to become an affiliate and make money. This is one way to start when figuring out how to start a blog and make money off of it.
Amazon Affiliate is another great option. Amazon is the largest online shopping center. Millions of people buy products off the shopping giant every year. They allow influencers to sign up and promote their products.
Will you make a lot of money off them? Probably not, unless you refer high end products and get a ton of traffic to your blog. Amazon does not pay very well in terms of how much you can make. Here is a table of how much commission is on different product categories.
There are others, but we recommend starting with one when just getting started. Continue to grow as your blog grows but be committed to doing one well before taking on more.
Sponsored Blog Content
This could be a big money-maker as well. This mainly is for bloggers who have traction and get higher volumes of traffic. It can depend on your niche, however.
A sponsored post is a blog post written about a specific product or company. It could be a review of a product that does well in your niche. Companies sometimes will reach out pay bloggers to refer their company or product.
How much will you make? This totally depends on your niche and the company in terms of how much they are willing to pay.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner of Making Sense of Cents noted on her blog that she makes $10,000-$20,000 a month simply from blogging, just about a company or product.
I recently heard from another blogger that they made $35,000 off 1 blog post! For some people that could be more than they earn with their regular job!
Definitely consider sponsored posts as a way to make money from a blog.
Selling Ad Space
This one is easy to implement, but harder to find a company to pay you. This is completely different from signing up with an ad network.
This method. Is where you reach out to a business that fits well within your niche, or they reach out to you, and you place a simple ad that they make on your website with a link back to theirs.
The ad is constant, meaning it never changes unless you take it down. Depending on your monthly traffic you could be selling ad space for around:
· 10,000 monthly views = $1,000 for agreed upon time.
· 25,000 – 50,000 = $1,000-$5,000 for agreed upon time.
· 50,000 – 100,000+ = $5,000-$10,000 for agreed upon time.
· 100,000+ = $10,000+ for agreed upon time.
This is based on our own research; however, these are completely possible to achieve with higher volumes. I would stray from this until you have at-least 10,000 monthly page views or more.
Again, the amount of time it stands on your website depends on you an how long of a time frame you negotiate with a company.
Selling a digital product can make you most if not all of your online income from blogging. This totally depends on your niche though.
What do we mean by digital product? We’re referring to an eBook, online course, consulting services, etc.
Whatever product you come up with, will depend on your niche. For example, a finance blogger may come up with a course that teaches you how to budget or make money online. You decide on how much people might be willing to pay for it, and then you publicize it on your blog.
A food blogger may create a stellar recipe book and sell it to their audience. A health and fitness blog might sell a course or book on how to eat healthier or how to get a sexier body in 30 days.
People are always willing to learn and grow. If they have been reading your blog for some time and they trust your expertise, they will most likely buy your product that you offer.
There’s not really a timeframe to wait before launching your digital course, this depends on your time and energy. You could even build a digital product from day one of launching your blog.
We recommend writing a few blog posts on a certain topic before launching it, however. What I mean is if you write a blog post on how to start a blog, and then another blog post on how to set it up, and then another on how to make money on that blog, then you start to offer your course on how to start a successful blog and show them that you will help make their blog super successful.
Digital products work. There are bloggers out there making $50,000 every month simply by offering a product for sale.
So, how Does A Blog Make Money? By implementing a few of these ideas to your own blog. Get started with your blog first by heading over to Bluehost, and then checking out our step-by-step guide for starting the blog.
It can be very confusing at first, but over time you’ll get the hang of it if you keep trying.
Some bloggers out there make $100,000 every month by implementing some of these methods. Not all will work well for everyone. You may only want to offer a digital product and show ads on your blog. This alone could make you a lot of money if you have a lot of page views.
